American
Wholesale Thermographers (AWT)
November, 2002 - April, 2003
Job
Title: Desktop Publisher / Typesetter / Graphic Designer
Status: Full-time
Compensation: $13/hourly, $28,000/annual estimate
Location: Lorton, Virginia
Job
Description: AWT is a nationally recognized printing
corporation that serves the printing trade on a wholesale
basis. Go to any Kinko's/Fed-Ex, Alphagraphics, Sir Speedy,
etc, and order something special, like business cards with
raised printing, or laser-safe stationery - and that's where
AWT comes into play. Working for AWT as a desktop publisher
/ graphic designer meant that my primary duties were putting
together orders for peoples' customized business cards and
other printed materials. Although business cards were easily
80% of the workload each day, I was responsible for other
things such as invitations, envelopes and other stationery.
Deadlines were daily, no single job had a turnaround time
more than a day, so work had to be completed each and every
night.
If
there's one thing I can say that I walked away from this job
with, is the ability to recognize fonts and typestyles instantly.
I find myself critiquing restaurant menus and the text of
stores everywhere I go.
Primary
Software: Windows 2000 (primary), Macintosh OS 8.6
(secondary), PageMaker, Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw,
Acrobat, QuarkXPress.
Additional
Required Skills & Knowledge: Typestyles, fonts,
printing to various output devices, time management, excellent
file management and organization, data entry, scanning and
faxing.
Reason
I'm not there anymore: Grew tired of working the
second-to-third shift schedule, and an opportunity in Atlanta,
Georgia arose.
